Adobe Announces They Will Be Bringing Flash Player Back To Linux

Chris Campbell, a developer from Adobe Flash Player, announced that Linux support for Adobe Flash Player will soon be making a comeback.

“Linux users have access to both NPAPI and PPAPI versions of Flash Player. However, for the last four years, the NPAPI version has been held at 11.2 and regularly updated with only security fixes while the PPAPI version (used in Chrome and Chromium based browsers), is in line with the standard Windows and Mac releases.” Chris stated.

“Today we are updating the beta channel with Linux NPAPI Flash Player by moving it forward and in sync with the modern release branch (currently version 23). We have done this significant change to improve security and provide additional mitigation to the Linux community.”

Although the ghost of flash player is long gone on Linux, seeing as many users internet browsers use HTML5, the Linux community probably have no idea what Adobe flash player is. The world of technology, as always will evolve and there will always be new software out to replace the dinosaur software.

Chris Campbell announced that they have two version currently available for beta, 64-bit and 32-bit.

“Currently we are distributing 32 and 64 bit binaries only, we will package these in proper installers after additional testing and feedback. Users should manually back-up their existing Flash Player plugin file from the appropriate system plug-in folder and copy the new binaries into place to use them.  Please note that our initial release does not support Fedora based distributions.  For more information, see our release notes.”

VIDEO: Gabe Newell – Linux Is The Future Of Gaming

Many people don’t switch to Linux due to their PC Games not being playable. Oh how soon may that change.

Gabe Newell, Co-Founder of Valve gave a speech at LinuxCon in 2013 about the future of Linux gaming. Valve is the creator of Steam, the pioneering game platform that distributes and manages thousands of games directly to a community of more than 65 million players around the world.

Newell believe that the future of gaming and content creation will be with Linux and Open Source Software. It’s free and open without all the loops and hoops to jump through like you would have dealing with Apple App Stores or Google Play and Windows.

Valve added Linux gaming to their beloved online Gaming software Steam in February 2013.

“The introduction of Steam to Ubuntu demonstrates growing demand for open systems from gamers and game developers,” said Ubuntu developer Canonical’s director of consumer applications David Pitkin in a statement. “We expect a growing number of game developers to include Ubuntu among their target platforms. We’re looking forward to seeing AAA games developed with Ubuntu in mind as part of a multi-platform day and date release on Steam.”

The addition of Linux to Steam came three years after Valve had stated they had no interest in developing Steam for Linux distributions.

Linux + Steam has brought us great new additions to gaming since their 2013 team up, including the Steam Box, which are stand-alone devices that let you enjoy the Steam gaming experience in one box, providing gamers with a host of hardware devices at a variety of price points and configurations. Customize a gaming experience that best suits your needs while choosing from Steam’s thousands of games, user-generated content, and more from any room in the home.

The video is from LinuxCon & CloudOpen North America in New Orleans, LA. Join Gabe Newell as he shares his insights on the future of Linux gaming.

Ubuntu 16.10 ‘Yakkety Yak’ Wallpaper Contest

The Ubuntu Free Culture Showcase is an opportunity to show off high quality free culture content in Ubuntu. At the heart of Ubuntu’s ethos is a belief in showcasing free software and free culture, and with each development cycle we open the opportunity for any artist to put their work in front of millions of Ubuntu users around the world.

The Contest description read:

Wallpaper

We’re looking for photographic wallpapers: lovely backgrounds that greet the user on Ubuntu’s welcome screen and at login, and provide a main color for the Unity Dash! We’re also looking for an illustrative wallpaper that plays off the theme “yakkety yak”.

* Images shouldn’t be too busy and filled with too many shapes and colors, a similar tone throughout is a good rule of thumb.
* A single point of focus, a single area that draws the eye into the image, can also help you avoid something too cluttered.
* The left and top edges are home to Ubuntu’s Launcher and Panel so be careful to consider how your images look in place so as not to clash with the user interface. Try them out on your own desktop; see how they feel.
* Try your image at different aspect ratios to make sure something important isn’t cropped out on smaller/ larger screens at different resolutions.
* Take a look at the wallpapers guidance on the Ubuntu Wiki regarding the size of images. Our target resolution is 3840 x 2400. This might result in a centered, 1080×1920 cropped image on Ubuntu phones, so keep this in mind!

Break all the rules except the resolution one! čśÇ

Rules and Requirements
So what do you need to know to enter?

The most important rule is that all artwork should be original (your own work).

Basic guidelines:

  • Keep it simple: don’t use too many colours, shapes, etc.
  • Use a single point of focus to draw the eye in
  • Remember to factor in Unity desktop elements, e.g., launcher, panel, etc.
  • Design at a minimum resolution of at least 3840 x 2400

Deadline for all submissions is September 29, 2016.
