VIDEO: Gabe Newell – Linux Is The Future Of Gaming

Many people don’t switch to Linux due to their PC Games not being playable. Oh how soon may that change.

Gabe Newell, Co-Founder of Valve gave a speech at LinuxCon in 2013 about the future of Linux gaming. Valve is the creator of Steam, the pioneering game platform that distributes and manages thousands of games directly to a community of more than 65 million players around the world.

Newell believe that the future of gaming and content creation will be with Linux and Open Source Software. It’s free and open without all the loops and hoops to jump through like you would have dealing with Apple App Stores or Google Play and Windows.

Valve added Linux gaming to their beloved online Gaming software Steam in February 2013.

“The introduction of Steam to Ubuntu demonstrates growing demand for open systems from gamers and game developers,” said Ubuntu developer Canonical’s director of consumer applications David Pitkin in a statement. “We expect a growing number of game developers to include Ubuntu among their target platforms. We’re looking forward to seeing AAA games developed with Ubuntu in mind as part of a multi-platform day and date release on Steam.”

The addition of Linux to Steam came three years after Valve had stated they had no interest in developing Steam for Linux distributions.

Linux + Steam has brought us great new additions to gaming since their 2013 team up, including the Steam Box, which are stand-alone devices that let you enjoy the Steam gaming experience in one box, providing gamers with a host of hardware devices at a variety of price points and configurations. Customize a gaming experience that best suits your needs while choosing from Steam’s thousands of games, user-generated content, and more from any room in the home.

Linux Gaming News: Stardew Valley Developers Say Linux Is Their Top Priority

A developer for the hit Steam game Stardew Valley hosted an “Ask Me Anything” thread on Reddit recently and among the questions a Reddit user asked when will we get Stardew Valley on Linux/Mac OS.

The developer responded:

“Mac/Linux ports are one of my top priorities. I will start looking into it seriously very soon, I promise. I’ve been doing things one at a time, and I will get to the Mac/Linux question here soon. It’s just a matter of what order I do everything in, and it’s hard to know exactly what’s best.”
