Linux Distro To Try: Rebellin Linux OS

The Rebellin Project was started by Utkarsh Sevekar to create a reliable, fast and secure Linux based Operating System. Rebellin Operating System is based on Debian GNU/Linux – the universal operating system. Rebellin therefore brings with it all the Debian goodies and a host of additional features.

The latest update announcement for Rebellin Linux was released on May 9th, 2016 and read:

Building a stable system on Debian Sid that’s reliable for day to day usage is hard. It took me quite a while this time. But I’m immensely happy with the result. Here’s Rebellin Linux v3. With the latest and greatest software from Debian. It’s fast, reliable and got all you need for a great multimedia experience.

List of updates:

  1. Gnome Shell upgraded to v3.20
  2. Mate Version upgraded to v1.12
  3. Kernel upgraded to v4.5
  4. SMXI scripts integrated
  5. Infinality Font Rendering Patches
  6. Droid Fonts added
  7. Improved theme for the Mate version
  8. Bluetooth support added to Mate version (It was previously missing! Silly me.)
  9. Plenty of package and driver updates
  10. Rebellin Manual with great beginner friendly tutorials available free of cost.

Some changes:

  1. Gnome terminal replaced by terminator. This enhances Gnome Shell stability. Gnome Terminal is buggy and results in system freeze.
  2. Totem replaced by VLC. Redundant software removed for building a lighter product.
  3. GDM3 replaced by LightDM. GDM3 was problematic during the build process. Resulted in blank screen on start up. LightDM works fine.

Linux Distro To Try: Neptune OS

The Casanova Team takes a look at Neptune OS in our latest Linux Distro To Try.

In a recent announcement on NeptuneOS website. A developer announced the launch of their latest update 4.5.

Neptune 4.5.1 ISOs are available for download now and update the system since the Neptune 4.5 release to the state of 3. May 2016.

The biggest issue fixed in this release is the usb booting from USB 3 ports. Besides that this new maintainance release features KDE SC 4.14.16 as desktop.

The Plasma 5 version was updated to Plasma 5.6.2 with KDE Frameworks 5.21.

What is Neptune OS according to their team?

Neptune is a GNU/Linux Distribution for desktops based fully upon Debian 7.0 (‘Wheezy’), except for a newer kernel and some drivers. It ships with a modern KDE Plasma Desktop with its main view on a good looking multimedia system which allows for getting work done. It also is a system which is flexible and very useful on usb sticks. Therefore we developed easy to use applications like USB Installer aswell as a Persistent Creator that allows you to store changes to your system on your live usb stick.

The Debian repository is the major base for getting updates and new software. Furthermore Neptune ships with its own software repository to update our own applications. (see Neptune Repositories for more information)

Neptune tries to get the BeOS message of a fully supported multimedia OS to a next generation of users.

Neptunes focuses on providing an elegant out of the box experience for the users. Therefor we ship a nice and simple overall look and feel aswell as a whole bunch of multimedia tools, like codecs, flash player, audio and video player.
