Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Beta available April 21, 2016

In the latest newsletter from Ubuntu’s Kernel Developers team, Ubuntu 16.04, codenamed “Xenial Xerus” is set to be released. It is the 6th long term support release of the open source operating system Ubuntu.

Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus will include the Unity 7 desktop, Linux Kernel 4.4, as well as a bunch of updated applications.

Xenial Xerus is set to be backed by five years of on-going updates, bug fixes, security patches as well as hardware enhancements.

The Ubuntu release dates are set as the following:

  • Alpha 1 – December 31st
  • Alpha 2 – January 28th
  • Feature Freeze — February 18th
  • Beta 1 – February 25th
  • UI Freeze — March 10th
  • Final Beta – March 24th
  • Kernel Freeze — April 7th
  • Release Candidate – April 14th

All of which are leading up to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS final release on April 21st.
