Linux Distro To Try: Ubuntu Studio


Ubuntu Studio is a variant of Ubuntu aimed at the GNU/Linux audio, video and graphic enthusiast as well as professional. The distribution provides a collection of open-source applications available for multimedia creation.

Review of Ubuntu Studio 16.04 LTS codenamed Xenial Xerus, which is a Long Term Support release and will be supported until 2019.

Ubuntu Studio 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) LTS was released on 21.04.2016.

Short list of new features:
– ubuntustudio-controls rewritten from scratch (also in Wily) for administering realtime privilege for user.
– Desktop setup more closely synced with Xubuntu for this release
– Changed from libav to ffmpeg
– A few changes in our multimedia package selection

Ubuntu Studio is a free and open source operative system, and an official flavor of Ubuntu. Ubuntu Studio is the most widely used multimedia orientated GNU/Linux distribution in the world. It comes preinstalled with a selection of the most common free multimedia applications available, and is configured for best performance for the Ubuntu Studio defined workflows: Audio, Graphics, Video, Photography and Publishing.

Ubuntu Studio is released every six months, but a long term release (LTS) version is released only every 2 years.

System Requirements:
The minimum RAM memory requirement for Ubuntu Studio is 1GB. It is highly recommended that you have 4GB, or more, as some applications use up a lot of RAM. The absolute minimum Hard Disk space required is at around 10GB, but that is just for installing the system.
