Linux Distro To Try: Tanglu

Tanglu is a Debian-based Linux distribution which aims to provide the best desktop experience for regular users and enthusiasts. Compared to Debian GNU/Linux, Tanglu plans to offer a number of user-friendly, desktop-oriented features such as availability of newer software, inclusion of extra firmware by default, and a regular, time-based release cycle.

Tanglu has just released their beta for Tanlgu, Beta 4. The release announcement read:

We are pleased to announce the release of the second development
version of Tanglu 4, which includes the KDE, GNOME and Core flavors!

This beta release contains many changes - most notably, imports from
Debian are frozen now and we ship with our final versions of KDE and

It also contain the following highlights:
 * systemd 229
 * Linux 4.6
 * KDE Plasma 5.6
 * GNOME 3.20

We are planning to update Mesa to 12.0 and also update the kernel
prior to doing the final release of Tanglu 4.

When testing Tanglu 4 Beta, please keep in mind that it is a
development snapshot release and still contains rough edges.
As always, we ship with less packages than Debian does, due to reduced
manpower and transitions that have been done.
In case you miss any package you need, please file a bug. It is likely
that the packages will be reintroduced anyway very soon, but by filing
a bug you can ensure that the package is taken care of.
If you experience problems with the Beta release, you might find help
on the forums[1] - or simply report a bug[2].

Known issues for the Beta include the live-installer only launching
from terminal in the GNOME flavor, and the GNOME flvavor not showing
GDM if run in VirtualBox, unless you boot with "quiet splash" removed
from the kernel command line.

KDE Plasma 5.8 Desktop To Be A LTS Release

KDE Plasma 5.7 was just released a few days ago and you know what that means, time to look for announcements and await updates for the next update, KDE Plasma 5.8.

Kubuntu Founder Johnathan Riddell said a few things about the next anticipated release in a short blog post:

Plasma 5.8 has its Kickoff meeting yesterday and we Kickered the plans into shape.  The big news is it’ll be an LTS release with bugfix releases coming out for 18 months after the .0.  This matches Qt 5.6 which is also on an LTS schedule and we’ll still to 5.6 as the minimum Qt version for Plasma 5.8 LTS.

As an LTS cycle we will focus on stability and performance for the 5.8 release.

The exception is for work on Wayland which won’t get LTS support but we do hope to be feature complete in time for the 5.8 release in October.

We went over the Plasma To Do board and tidied it up and added some new items.

And you can look forward to talks at Akademy by David and other Plasma developers, plus BoF sessions through the week.

To help out with Plasma developing say hi in #plasma on Freenode.

The release of KDE Plasma 5.8 is slated to be released on October 18.

The official release schedule is as following:

KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS will have nine point releases, kicking it off with KDE Plasma 5.8.1, arriving on October 25. After that, KDE Plasma 5.8.2 is set to land on November 1, KDE Plasma 5.8.3 on November 15, and KDE Plasma 5.8.4 on December 23.

The KDE Plasma 5.8 development cycle will continue in 2017 with the fifth point release, KDE Plasma 5.8.5 on January 3, KDE Plasma 5.8.6 on March 7, KDE Plasma 5.8.7 on June 6, KDE Plasma 5.8.8 on October 31, and the last one, KDE Plasma 5.8.9, on April 24, 2018. So yes, KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS will be supported for two long years.
